INTERSECTIONS

Intersections is a theatre residency program designed specifically for English language arts and reading classrooms. The program actively examines the connections between narrative literature, dramatic literature, and theatrical production. Intersections provides students with an engaging, interactive, and fun way to read, analyze, interpret, and respond to literature by reading a literary work as if preparing to use it in a theatrical production.

Theatre artists often begin with a written script and, through production, activate the text. During Intersections, students explore and apply the processes of playwrights, actors, and designers with a work of narrative literature. They create theatre from a narrative, imagining and actualizing the written word, and bringing it life on stage. This provides students with alternative approaches to reading, interpreting, and understanding text.

Round House Theatre's Education & Outreach staff and professional teaching artists facilitate a series in-class workshops (10 for Elementary School, 12 for Middle and High School) at participating schools. Workshops incorporate a selection of literary text (short story or prose excerpt) and all activities and projects relate back to it. Students build a portfolio of theatrical material over the course of the residency and all students' artistic choices and work must be supported by the literary text. Every Intersections residency is directly linked to a Round House Theatre production.

Intersections is an extension of Round House Theatre's 5-year Literary Works Project. Program content directly links with Maryland's Voluntary State Curriculum in English/Language Arts and Essential Learner Outcomes for Fine Arts (Theatre).
