Fun and exciting opportunities for students from K – Adult to develop their artistic and performance skills with programs in Silver Spring.

Our Summer Programs are designed to inspire creativity, exercise imaginations, promote artistic risk-taking, and explore unique ways to tell stories through theatre. Round House Theatre’s teaching artists nurture students’ individual talents in an environment of creative collaboration and ensemble building. From kindergarten students creating the jungles of Africa to high school students exploring the art of the musical, our students experience the joy of creating and sharing theatre.
Some Summer Program Basics
Locations: Summer Programs take place in three locations in Silver Spring.

Please pay particular attention to the location of your session.
Scholarships: A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. To request an application, e-mail education@roundhousetheatre.org. Applicants are evaluated on a rolling basis. Funds are limited.

Times & Location: EZ Care is available for programs for students grades in Summer Destinations, Summer Storytellers and Summer Theatre Artists. Before-Care is available from 7:30 ‑ 9:00am. After-Care is available from 4:00 ‑ 6:00pm. Both are provided at Round House’s Education Center. (Students at RHT Silver Spring are walked to and from the other location.)
Late Pickup/Fees: After-Care ends at 6:00pm. Between 6:00 – 7:00pm, late fees are assessed at the rate of $1 per minute. If you are registering for After Care, you are required to provide a valid credit card for these charges (see registration page).

Before and After Care Available
Are you eager to explore faraway lands and have fantastic adventures? Summer Destinations is the camp for you! Every day young actors use their imagination as their guide to new and exciting “destinations”- from Outer Space to Under the Sea. Create a new world through visual arts and creative dramatics. Students participate in daily art, movement and drama classes in age specific groups. They use these skills to create afternoon projects that incorporate drama, art, creative movement, dance, and song. Each week features a different theme and every day a new location to explore! Students can join us for multiple sessions and never visit the same place twice! Join us at the end of the final camp day for an informal sharing of highlights from our travels – favorite songs, dances, stories, art, and experiences for parents and friends. NEW THIS YEAR – Each week includes an expanded movement/dance component.

We are all storytellers at heart. Let’s dive into stories and bring them to life onstage! Summer Storytellers is a fusion camp featuring a focus on character creation, movement, acting, and design. Under the guidance of a weekly theme, students will interpret a variety of classic and contemporary stories for the stage. Mornings feature specific drama and design focused classes that lead into an afternoon full of creative experimentation, rehearsal, and performance. The culmination of our week is an original story devised by the ensemble and shared at the end of the session for family and friends! Join us to develop and hone skills in the performing arts in this fun and exciting summer program!

SUMMER THEATRE ARTISTS

Each session ends with an informal presentation by the students.
IMPROV teaches students to think on their feet and work collaboratively to create improvised scenes and situations. A spontaneous, intensive good time! Important note: There is no difference in content or skill level between the June and July sessions.
CLOWNING AROUND allows students to explore the art and fun of clowning and physical comedy. From Commedia dell’arte to pratfalls to stand-up, this class is perfect for the comic in training.
ACTING FOR THE STAGE helps students develop their acting skills by learning to use their bodies, voices, and imaginations to create characters, explore dramatic texts, and perform on stage.
STORIES BY DESIGN is our NEW program introducing students to the elements of theatrical design and technology. Students will learn about set, costume, lighting, sound and the new field of projection design and how they are used to tell stories.
MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP is an exciting two-week program that will help students begin training to become a “triple threat” performer. Students will develop their acting, singing, and dancing skills both through classwork and in rehearsal and performance of ensemble musical numbers.
FUNKY FISTICUFFS serves as a fun and fantastic introduction to the art of hand to hand stage combat. In a safe environment, under the watchful instruction of a trained Fight Choreographer, students will learn the basics of falls, combat, and writing/creating a fight scene from scratch.
THEATRICAL GRAB-BAG is a “best of” session, combining favorite activities and games from the summer’s different classes. It’s the perfect class for both new and returning students to explore old favorites as well as gain new experiences in performance.

SUMMER THEATRE INTENSIVE

FUNDAMENTALS OF ACTING Develop the skills you need to be a better actor! This session gives teen actors with varying levels of experience a chance to learn the fundamentals of acting through games, creating characters, and scene study. The week will culminate in a showcase of scene work.
IMPROV FUNDAMENTALS Have fun thinking fast and creating performances on your feet! Students will learn the basic skills of improvisation and create endless zany, unique characters while playing fun, fast improv games. Learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, take risks, make strong performance choices, and leave the audience laughing! This class ends with a showcase of favorite games and improvs.
THEATRICAL GRAB-BAG Take your skills as a performer to the next level by experiencing a variety of theatrical specialties! Students will explore a different and exciting subject every day of the week including Stage Combat, Clowning and Physical Comedy, Monologues and Shakespeare with a different specialist every day! This is a great class for students who want some variety in their week and want to develop all kinds of different performance skills and will end with a showcase of some of our favorites!
MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE Act, dance, and sing classic Broadway songs and contemporary favorites! In this 2-week session, students will learn important musical theatre skills including interpretation of book and lyrics, creating characters, and vocal and dance techniques. From Schwartz to Sondheim students are sure to have a terrific time creating a musical theatre showcase for all to enjoy!
PLAYWRITING, PRODUCTION, PERFORMANCE Write, produce, and perform an original play! In this 2-week session, students will work together as playwrights in the first week, creating an original work based on their own experiences. In the second week, students will perform and produce their story, making choices as actors, directors, and designers. Join a true collaboration (with friends you’ve made throughout the summer) to make a unique piece of theatre to share at the completion of the program!

ACTOR’S CRAFT encourages adult students to explore a variety of approaches, techniques, and views of acting. Participants will learn a vocabulary and skill set for creating and performing through improvisation, monologue, and scene study. Students build self-confidence, improve public speaking skills, increase flexibility, and enhance creative problem-solving ‑ gaining skills that are transferable to the workplace as well as the stage. Actors Craft culminates in a showcase class work for family and friends.
