After School Residencies
Round House Theatre partners with Parent-Teacher Associations, school teachers and administrators to offer creative dramatics and theatre workshops as part of after-school clubs and enrichment programs. Students are able to participate in these opportunities in the comfort of a known environment and take advantage of school-sponsored transportation (like activity buses). Past residencies have been conducted at: Bethesda Elementary, Oakland Terrace Elementary, Rosemary Hills Elementary, Kemp Mill Montessori School, Sligo Creek Elementary, Woodlin Elementary School, East Silver Spring Elementary, Highland View Elementary, Grace Episcopal Day School, Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Washington Grove Elementary School, Highland View Elementary School, Georgian Forest Elementary School.
2010/11 Residencies:
Animal Tales
Grade Level: K – 1st Grade
Explore the wild side of the animal kingdom from the safety and warmth of a classroom. Each week, students will discover new creatures—from the smallest mouse to the most magnificent dragon—through creative play, song, movement, and visual arts. Animal Tales concludes with an open class showing for family members.
Crazy Characters
Grade Level: K – 1st Grade
Description: Using their imaginations as their guides, students will explore familiar characters and create new ones through creative play, movement, visual art and puppet-making. Crazy Characters culminates in an informal sharing of students’ favorite characters for family members.
Destination Anywhere!
Grade Level: K – 2nd Grade
Each week students will be presented with a new location —from California to Calcutta—that they learn about through imagination games, and then create and act-out their own characters and stories. The residency introduces students to a variety of cultures and countries while teaching fundamentals of theatre. Destination Anywhere! culminates in an informal (and informational!) showing for family members.
Adventures in Acting
Grade Level: 2nd – 3rd grade
Come along on a theatrical adventure with Round House Theatre each week! The itinerary for this theatrical journey includes: creative drama, improvisation and performing with scripts. Adventures in Acting culminates with a demonstration of skills learned and showing of short scenes for family members.
Create Your Own Adventure
Grade Level: 2nd – 4th Grade
What if the Big Bad Wolf blew down the Little Pig’s house of bricks? What new powers would you give Superman to defeat villains? In this residency, students create their own adventures by taking control of stories and characters, and re-imagining them through improvisation and playmaking. This residency will culminate in an open session and informal showing for family members.
3, 2, 1 – PLAY!
Grade Level: 3rd – 5th grade
This class allows students to learn about theatre by making it! Each week participants will be presented with a new picture, song, story, or game from which they can create original short plays. The last session of 3, 2, 1—PLAY! will be open to family members to create with their children.
Make Me Laugh
Grade Level: 3rd – 5th grade
Tickle your funny bone! In this class, students will explore the humor of everyday life and turn it into theatrical performance. Through improvisation students will learn different approaches to comedy. Make Me Laugh culminates in an informal showing for family members.
